When do I need to get a base grind for my snowboard?
I got a new board at the beginning of this season, and have probably rode it about 20 days, in Pocono weather conditions, which seem to beat up the base and edges quite a lot. i have made a few base repairs with p tex candles, im not sure if that really matters. Should i get a base grind? ( I want my board in top shape since im going to park city later on.) If this isn't enough information, please let me know what a good indication of needing a base grind is. I hope someone can help. thanks in advance.
I highly doubt you need a base grind after 20 days on it. Typically a 100+ day snowboarder does maybe 1 base grind at the end of each season, sometimes not even. The only reason you ever need to consider a base grind is if your base is completely scratched to pieces and it is not smooth or evenly flat.
Base grinds take off a little bit of the layer off your base so you don't want to have one unless you really need it because it reduces the life of your board.
As for the edges, just buy a gummy stone at your local snowboard shop ($5) and just run it along your edges once or twice after each day to get all the burs out and keep it from rusting.
