What's the best way to keep my gear in the canoe?
I'm going canoeing with my dad in the Boundary Waters for a week. I've been canoeing before, but not on a trip like this. We have two 115L dry bags full of gear and I've heard that many people tie them to the inside of the canoe for better stability and bouyancy etc,, but only sometimes. We aren't going whitewater rafting but we do have 5 small sets of rapds. So here are the questions I have:
1.) When do you tie the bags down, and when do you leave them untied
2.) Where should they be placed? Center, or one in the front, one in the back?
3.) What is the best method for tying them in?
Is there any other relevant info I need to know about this subject? Thanks!
I have taken many trips to the BWCA With the Boy Scouts as scout and as a leader and never have I tied any of our packs in the canoe.
The best way to figure out wear to place the packs is to get into the canoe and place them in. You want the weight even in the boat. ( not too much in the front not too much in the back. )
Again the only things that we have ever tied in the canoe is our fishing poles and paddles when we portaged from lake to lake. Remember you have to carry every thing that you have.
I would have all of your gear in air tight bags things some time drop when you get out of the boat. you will want a pair of shoes that you just don't care about any more and were them in the boat in the water and on the shore. It will save your feet from many cuts and scrapes.
And when you see where it says put all smellable in bear bags do so. As you do not want critters in the tent with you at night. Hang all your food and smellable on the bear poles at night. So you will want a nice long rope to hang you goodies.
