Arena Stage Takes Form

I took a walk on Saturday to see Arena Stage from the Maine Avenue side. The project is taking shape as the roof comes together. We can see horizontal supports beginning to be installed on the left side of the photo here. These supports will hold up the glass curtain which we might be seeing put into place soon.

Only one more large wooden support post is left to be installed on the 6th Street side by the new Cradle Theater.

The dramatic swoop of the cantilever roof can now be seen between the trees. Bing Thom used to have a rendering of this roof on their website, but it has since been removed. In that rendering, we could see patrons walking on the level above the stairway entrance below the cantilever.

Photos: above left is a view of Arena Stage from Maine Avenue; above right is the cantilever roof with Waterside towers in the background.

I really liked the design when I saw the drawings. However, now that the roof's on, I'm not as enthusiastic. The new building seems too large for the space and too big in relation to the surrounding buildings.

I kind of agree in some ways. The whole complex is really huge and many who have been following the project in the neighborhood since inception think that it is much larger than they originally thought it would be.

However, the concept includes a tremendous amount of glass which is designed to give it a lighter and more open feel. I think we need to see that effect and see it illuminated. I am reserving final judgement for now...with the highest of hopes.

I do like that the edge of the roof canopy includes solar panels which presumably will help power the building. We need more of that type of renewable energy facilities in the city.

i live literally right next to this project in waterside towers... literally like step out on my balcony in the morning and I am saying good morning to construction workers...

but to my point i hate this design... the incasing of the old building was a stupid and ugly idea.
