"Stagnant water carries numerous risks. Any number of dangerous bacteria and parasites can thrive in hot, fetid pools, even E. coli bacteria could be there. Parasites could be in the water, such as giardia or cryptosporidiosis.
The danger comes when the water splashes in the eyes, the mouth — your hands are contaminated. It would also take only a small cut or scratch to expose someone to tetanus, an acute, often fatal, disease."
I saw children playing with sticks in the green, stagnant water at Town Center Park East this weekend.
CLEAN UP OUR PARK NOW!
UPDATE, Thursday, June 4th, 10:30 am:
SWDCBlog just got the following email from DPR:
The DC Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR) appreciates all of the community feedback from constituents regarding the pond and the condition of the park at 6th and I St., SW. On Wednesday, I along with the managers from the Facilities, Maintenance and Risk Departments viewed the pond and assessed the maintenance needs of the park. In order to return the pond to its original state, a sump pump will be brought in to remove the standing water in the pond and the drains will be cleaned of debris, after which water can be returned to the pond. Additionally, the grassy areas of the park have been mowed and the trash was recently collected. We hope that the community members will soon be able to fully enjoy the park and that you will continue to follow our progress as we work to provide quality recreational areas for all D.C. residents.
Thank you,
Dr. Ximena Hartsock
Acting Director, DC Department of Parks and Recreation

the silver lining is that we had a legitimate and credible outcry over this...that gives me hope that the people in SWDC really do care about development and progress. this park could and should be an oasis for everyone...i think making it a dog park would also be perfect!
Unfortunately, there is still a green scum covering up the silver lining as of Sunday midday.
Why should we take a park that is currently available to everyone and restrict it to dog owners? I personally hate dogs, want nothing to do with them and certainly don't want the only park in my neighborhood to be turned into an open zone for dog crap, noisy dogs, and ill-behaved dogs.
