Unsafe Pedestrian Situation on 6th Street

If anyone thinks that I am obsessed with 6th Street, well, you're correct. Besides the fact it transects most of the current development in Southwest, it also happens to be the street that I live on, so I see a lot of it.

Unfortunately, lack of communication between developers, the city, remodel projects, and anyone else who should be cc'ed, we have been left without a sidewalk at all on either side of the street for half a block between The View at Waterfront and the Town Center Park. Everyone is being forced to walk on the street, and cross well before the crosswalk. It is not only dangerous, but it is also a near impossible feat for anyone who is disabled in any way. The situation began at the end of last week, has continued through the weekend and persists today. Pedestrians beware. Common sense would dictate that at least one side of a street should have sidewalk access. After all, we do pay our taxes.

These photos, which were taken at noon today, show the impossible sidewalk situation.

I thought there was some regulation that said that if there was construction going on that involved the pedestrian sidewalk, the construction/developers were required to provide a covered (safe) walkway. Not that I see that on a regular basis anyway, but I know know, maybe I'm thinking rationally...

You are correct. However, the effective date of that law is relatively recent, and was applied to permits secured after the effective date. Area Stage got their permit before.

I called 311 today (the DC information number), and after 15 minutes of getting transferred and being on hold, I spoke to someone at DDOT with a foreign accent nearly impossible to understand. He told me that he would look into the contractor doing the work opposite Arena Stage.

Bravo! While driving home tonight on 6th Street I saw that the sidewalk across from Arena Stage had been re-opened.

Really? I haven't seen the open sidewalk. It is really a dangerous situation to have, especially in the morning hours with kids and people heading to work. We have buses coming through along with other traffic. Great piece.
